David Sacach grew up and lives in San Marcos la Laguna in the Department of Solola, Guatemala. He works with the Jovenes Maya Kaqchikell a non-profit association serving to remember Mayan culture and pass that on to the youth of San Marcos. They also teach about the local medicinal plants' use and identification. The Jovenes Maya also hope to reforest the local area as well as offer Eco-Tours and hikes to Santa Cruz Santa Lucia and other great locations around Lake Atitlan.
I Think David offers a unique eye into the Mayan culture that a tourist can never see. He captures the essence of the people he seeks to photograph. As well, I think he encourages the confidence of the people in his focus, that someone not of indigenous background can never hope to catch in thier lens. I hope that you will enjoy these clasic photographs of Guatemala as much as I do.
