Who are we?
We are a local Mayan Kaqchikel youth group working for the conservation of the native flora and fauna of San Marcos LL, as well as the reuniting the people with our traditions. The objectives of our group are to give priority and conserve:

The original flora and fauna of the region
The tradition of our town: the maguey
The Mayan Patrimony

Old Mayan Trail to Santa Lucia Utatlán


Before contemporary roads, this old Mayan path was used by local Marqueños to commerce their products such as oranges, Jocotes, matasanos, crabs, small fish and most importantly, maguey handbags that are still weaved in town today. This old Mayan trail leads to Santa Lucia Utatlán from where you’ll appreciate the richness of the area, and on Sundays have a chance to observe the unexplored market day.

Estimated time: 5 -6 hours
Difficulty level: medium to challenging
Recommendations: bring plenty of water, a snack, sunscreen and comfortable shoes.



Maguey Tour San Marcos


We will show you the maguey plant, and how important it is in our town. We will show you how the maguey is prepared, for weaving and how to weave the plant fibers into usable bags rope and construction materials.

Walk to Santa Cruz La Laguna

Take a walk alongside beautiful lake Atitlán to Santa Cruz La Laguna and stroll through two small indigenous villages (Tz´ununa´ and Jaibalito). During this walk you will capture amazing views of the lake and will know more about its natural and cultural history.

ETHNO-BOTANICAL GARDEN
MEDICINAL PLANTS TOUR


The medicinal plant tour is a class geared towards our interest in conserving the native plant Species as well as an introduction to the way the Mayans used plants for medicinal cures. You will learn the names of the plants, how they were used in the past, and talk about how the curanderos (old healers) used the herbs for spiritual uses and to heal people.
